Film Body Seeks Legal Action Against Paid Negative Reviews

In a move that could shake up the entire film review ecosystem, the Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) has decided to take a firm stand against a dark and growing trend in the industry. The powerful council, which represents over 375 of Indiaâs top Producers, announced on Monday that it is preparing to take legal action against certain Social Media Influencers who allegedly engage in extortion.
For the past few years, there have been whispers and complaints about this issue, but now the industry is ready to fight back officially.
The âPay Up Or Weâll Sabotage Youâ Tactic
According to the IFTPC, there is an âalarming trendâ of some influencers using predatory tactics. They allege that these individuals approach producers with a demand for payment. If the producers refuse to pay up, the influencers then threaten to release âmalicious and disparagingâ reviews and reaction videos.
The council stated that this goes beyond just a bad review. These are allegedly âtargeted campaigns designed to deliberately sabotage a projectâs reception and commercial viability.â Itâs a clear threat to a filmâs success even before it has a chance to win over the audience.
âCriticism Is Welcome, Extortion Is Notâ
The IFTPC was very clear in its statement that it is not against film criticism. The council respects the âfreedom of speechâ and welcomes âgenuine, constructive criticismâ from reviewers and the public.
However, they have drawn a firm line between honest opinions and what they are calling âextortionate practices.â The council believes these acts by âunscrupulous individualsâ are a âgrave threat to the creative and economic health of the Indian film and entertainment industry,â and they have decided that enough is enough.

Top Lawyers On The Job
The IFTPC is not just making statements; they are taking concrete steps. The council has announced that it is seeking opinions from âtop-tier legal counselsâ to figure out the best way to tackle this issue. They are exploring all possible legal options under both civil and criminal law to bring a âswift and decisive endâ to these alleged practices. This is a clear signal that the industry is gearing up for a legal battle to protect its filmmakers. The entire industry will be watching closely to see how this fight unfolds.
