23 Years After Its Ending, Firefly Revival Chances Get Perfect Response From Series Star

It’s difficult to choose just one aspect of the sci-fi TV show Firefly that fans and critics miss most, as audiences have been hoping for a series revival for decades. Starring Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Firefly features a stellar ensemble cast going on epic space adventures against the backdrop of emotionally real and vulnerable stories, and the actors are well aware of the calls for a revival.

Firefly is one of the best sci-fi TV shows of all time, and even though it only ran for a single season, this hasn’t impacted the legacy and longevity of the story. Brilliantly blending science fiction and the Western genre, while tying this together with timeless tales of revolution and rebellion, Firefly appeals to audiences of all generations.

Comicbook.com recently covered an interview Morena Baccarin gave on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, where the actress who brought Inara to life spoke frankly about the future of the beloved franchise:

“There’s always talk,” Baccarin said of a spinoff that would reunite the crew of the Serenity. “There’s always people asking about it.”

“Part of me would be excited to revisit that world, and part of me is also a little bit like, I love it so much where it is, that I’m worried about reopening that door,” Baccarin shared about reprising her character from the series, even with all the fan enthusiasm.

Baccarin was quick to manage expectations, saying that she “seriously doubts” a live-action reboot of the series with the original cast would be feasible, pointing out “that’s a lot of different careers and different people that you have to negotiate with and make work and all that … schedules and whatnot.”

Even so, Baccarin was just as quick to suggest a Firefly reboot in another medium, “Could there be a comic book or [another] thing–maybe?”

There’s Always A Possibility Of Coming Back, But Nothing Is Confirmed

Baccarin’s comments are the perfect response to the frequently asked question of whether or not a Firefly revival will happen. It’s impossible to know what will happen in the future, and leaving the door open for potential collaborations means that Baccarin could come back if she wanted. However, she’s aware that promising too much would only hurt the fans who have been waiting for a reboot.

The Firefly cast’s best shows and movies have only further cemented the talents of the ensemble, making it easy to wish that they would reunite and reprise their original roles. Based on the fact that the actors have worked together so many times over the years, with many Firefly alumni featured in Fillion’s projects, it demonstrates that the performers enjoy working together.

Despite the desire and excitement surrounding a revival, the logistics would be difficult to balance, as most of the actors and creative team have moved on to different projects in the years since Firefly ended. While it’s fun to imagine what narratives would unfold onscreen, Baccarin doesn’t have any illusions about how much time has passed and what it would take to reunite the cast.

Our Take On Firefly Returning To Screens One Day

It Would Be Thrilling, But The High Expectations Could Bog Down The Revival

It’s unbelievable that Firefly is a sci-fi show that was canceled too soon, and in a perfect world, the series would have gone on for many seasons, earning a satisfying ending. However, as Baccarin says, it would likely make more sense for the world of Firefly to be expanded through a medium other than television. Like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly could come back as a comic.

Alan Tudyk has an exciting upcoming project set to reunite him with Nathan Fillion and other members of the beloved Firefly cast.

While a TV reboot would be amazing, there would be many conflicting expectations and opinions that would cloud the path forward for the series. Firefly worked so well in 2002 because it was entirely original and was committed to crafting a new type of story, and the show’s larger-than-life reputation today could disrupt this essential piece of the writing and narrative.
