Telangana government has released ₹375 crore for the Musi Riverfront Development project.

The funds would be utilised for restoring the Musi River, which passes through the historic State Capital to its old glory, ensuring regular flow of water in the river.

Last year, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced plans to develop the Musi River Front as a tourist destination with positive ecological implications for the city with a projected total outlay of over ₹1 lakh crore.

The long-neglected river that passes through Hyderabad has virtually become a drainage canal filled with wastewater from various parts of the city. Encroachments in the riverbed have further worsened the situation pushing the city into floods during the rainy season.

Despite bitter criticism from the opposition Bharata Rashtra Samithi (formerly TRS), the Congress – Government in the State has been maintaining that beautification and restoration of the river was vital for not only attracting tourists, but also to keep the fast-growing city free from pollution and floods in the rainy season.
