Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor are set to make a comeback to the big screens with Param Sundari, which is set to release in August 2025. Tushar Jalota-directed romantic comedy film that revolves around the story of two people from North and South Indian who unexpectedly fall for each other. However, before the release, Sidharth and Janhvi’s forthcoming film Param Sundari has landed in the center of a controversy. The film has been criticized over a specific scene that was filmed within a church, with the two actors flirting. A Christian organization has protested against the scene, stating that it offends the religious sentiments of people.
Param Sundari lands in controversy
As per a report by Mid-Day, the Watchdog Foundation, a Christian organization, has addressed various authorities calling for the scene to be cut from the film. Their grouse has been forwarded to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Mumbai Police, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, and the Maharashtra government. They are not simply requesting the scene’s removal from the movie but also its exclusion from the trailer and all marketing videos.
Godfrey Pimenta, a campaigner and spokesperson for the Watchdog Foundation, stated, “The CBFC, established under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, is entrusted with certifying films while taking into account both artistic expression and respect for religious feelings.”
In their correspondence, the organization noted that the church is a holy place of worship for Christians and would not be appropriate to depict in such a manner. “The church is a sacred place of worship for Christians, and it should not be depicted as a stage for indecent content. This portrayal not only disrespects the spiritual sanctity of the religious place of worship but also deeply offends the sensibilities of the Catholic community,” the letter read. They also raised a question about how the CBFC cleared the film with such a scene and issued a warning that public protests might erupt if it is not deleted. The Foundation has also demanded registration of an FIR against the producer, director, and actors of the film for allegedly offending religious sentiments.
This is not the first instance of a Bollywood movie facing accusations for how it portrays religious sites or rituals. Such controversies have, in the past, resulted in scenes being cut, edited, or modified before release. However, the producers of Param Sundari have not made an official statement regarding the issue. With the release date of the film drawing near, only time will tell if the scene will remain, be cut, or be removed altogether in order to prevent further controversy.
