See The New Ending Everyone Is Talking About
The soul of a beloved film is at the center of a storm. Raanjhanaa, the 2013 tragic romance that solidified its place in the hearts of millions, has been re-released with a new, AI-generated “happy ending.” But while some fans may celebrate, the film’s original creator, Aanand L Rai, has publicly condemned the move, igniting a fiery debate over art, ownership, and the future of filmmaking.
The controversy erupted with the August 1 re-release of the film’s Tamil version, Ambikapathy. Studio Eros International, reportedly without the director’s consent, used artificial intelligence to fundamentally change the movie’s iconic, heartbreaking conclusion.
What The New AI Raanjhanaa Ending Reveals
In the original film, audiences were left shattered as a fatally injured Kundan (Dhanush) succumbs to his injuries, leaving Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) to grieve his lifeless body. The new AI version rewrites this cinematic history. The scene cuts from Zoya caressing Kundan’s face to a shot of him breathing. His friends watch in relief before entering the room, smiling. Kundan then opens his eyes and wakes up, not to a somber score, but to celebratory music. Reports from those who have seen the re-release claim the AI effect is seamless, making it difficult for new viewers to even spot the alteration.
A War Between Creator And Corporation
This decision has created a deep rift between the director and the studio. In a passionate statement, Aanand L Rai declared the new version a “reckless takeover.” He wrote, “I do not support or endorse the AI-altered version of Raanjhanaa. It is unauthorised… What’s now being circulated is not a tribute. It is a reckless takeover that strips the work of its intent, its context, and its soul.”
Eros International fired back with a sharp rebuttal, dismissing Rai’s claims as a “deliberate negative PR stunt.” The studio stated, “We at Eros International Media Limited categorically reject and strongly object to the unfounded and sensationalist remarks… It is unfortunate that a filmmaker of his stature would attempt to conflate legal accountability with creative victimhood.”
While the battle rages between creator and corporation, audiences in theatres are reportedly embracing the change. The re-release has seen good occupancy, with fans of Dhanush creating a frenzy over the new, happy outcome. The incident leaves a landmark question hanging over the industry: who truly owns a film’s soul
