Resurrection Completely Wasted A Massive Killer Spinoff Series Setup
WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Resurrection episode 5.
Only halfway through its debut season, Dexter: Resurrection has already missed a massive opportunity for its first-ever non-Dexter franchise spin-off series. While the series has received rave reviews following its mid-July premiere, Resurrection has taken some surprising turns that overlooked one character with massive potential.
In Dexter: Resurrection episode 5, the chemistry between Dexter, under the alias of the rideshare killer “Red”, and Mia, who the media has labeled Lady Vengeance, begins to take off. After Dexter learns that Mia is not actually a serial killer vigilante like him, he calls the police on her so that he can frame her for the death of Ryan Foster, whom Harrison killed in the Dexter: Resurrection premiere.
Lady Vengeance Could Have Been The First Great Spinoff Series Without Dexter
Ritter Is Great In The Role But Mia Is Not Who Dexter Thought She Was
Dexter and Mia looked to be forming a dynamic duo of vigilante killers before Dexter realized that Mia wasn’t as virtuous as her reputation made her seem. If Mia had been a legitimate counterpart to Dexter throughout Resurrection season 1, she could have eventually risen to be a standout character in the series, perhaps spawning her own spinoff show as a result.
Now that Lady Vengeance is proven to be a facade, Mia is just like the rest of Dexter’s serial killer targets.
Like Neagley to Reacher in Amazon’s Reacher series, Mia could be the star of her own standalone series called Lady Vengeance. Dexter could have made appearances in that series as well, further extending her lore, while Mia could be portrayed in-depth with her own method of hunting and killing her sexual predator targets.
Now that Lady Vengeance is proven to be a facade, Mia is just like the rest of Dexter’s serial killer targets. While she’s still alive at this point in the series, she is not who Dexter thought she was, so a spinoff show really wouldn’t be all that interesting without a fundamental vigilante element.
A Lady Vengeance Dexter Spinoff Could Still Work As Another Prequel Series
At This Rate, Who Knows How Many Spinoffs The Dexter Franchise Will Make
If Clyde Phillips and the Dexter team were really adamant about a Lady Vengeance spinoff show, it could still be done as a prequel, perhaps back when Mia only attacked sexual predators before things got out of control. There’s enough Lady Vengeance backstory in Resurrection episode 5 to build on, so it’s not entirely impossible.
That said, a prequel of that kind is quite unlikely, considering the Trinity Killer one is still in development hell. It would be an awesome show for Ritter, who has proven herself as the star of Jessica Jones after her breakout role in Breaking Bad. It will be interesting to see how far her character goes, and if she survives, by the end of Dexter: Resurrection season 1.
