Superstar Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated film Coolie is scheduled to release on August 14, and the excitement around it is anything but dull. Before its release, this action-packed entertainer had already set the box office buzzing, and by no small margin. With a whopping budget of Rs 375 crore, the movie has remarkably recovered more than 66% of the cost even before its release. Trade sources indicate that Coolie has earned approximately Rs 250 crore by selling its international, digital, music, and satellite rights. Of this, the international distribution rights alone earned Rs 68 crore, marking the popularity of the film across the globe.
Rajinikanth’s Coolie breaks records
The pre-release success of Coolie does not end there. Overseas advance bookings have already contributed another Rs 30 crore to the kitty, taking the pre-release revenue to almost Rs 280 crore, all before Indian audiences even catch a glimpse at theaters. Industry observers feel that given the current pace, Coolie can easily break records, possibly surpassing overseas opening day numbers of Leo (Rs 66 crore) and emerging as the largest-ever first-day grosser for a Tamil movie outside India.
The buzz of Rajinikanth’s upcoming release is clearly visible throughout South India. In Karnataka and Kerala, theatres are going to have special shows as early as 6 am to cater to the demand of fans. In Tamil Nadu, bylaws insist that the day’s first show must begin at 9 am, but that has not arrested the frenzy. Actually, in Thrissur, Kerala, there have been videos captured where fans could be seen sprinting into the theatres to get the best of seats as soon as the bookings began.
