J&K: Man nabbed with 120 rolls of banned nylon thread
Jammu, Aug 6: In a major crackdown, Jammu Police today nabbed a man with 120 rolls of banned nylon thread from the Pacca Danga area here.
A police spokesman here said that to curb the illegal sale and use of banned nylon thread (commonly known as Gattu), Police Station Pacca Danga conducted checking and apprehended one person in possession of the banned material, nylon thread (gattu).
During the operation, he said that two individuals travelling in a vehicle were intercepted.
One suspect, identified as Mahesh Kumar, a resident of Janipur Colony, fled from the spot, abandoning the vehicle, he added, and said that the co-passenger, Varun Raina of Karan Nagar, Jammu, was arrested on the spot.
He added that a total of 120 rolls of banned nylon thread were recovered from the vehicle, following which a case was registered under relevant sections at Police Station Pacca Danga.
Police have reiterated that nylon thread (Gattu) is a dangerous, non-biodegradable material that poses grave risks — it can cause severe or fatal injuries to motorcyclists and pedestrians, kill birds by entangling or slashing their wings and necks, and cause environmental damage by clogging drains and polluting water bodies.
Its use is strictly prohibited by law and violates orders issued by the District Magistrate.
Jammu Police have urged the public to refrain from selling, purchasing, or using such hazardous material.
They have warned that strict legal action will be taken against all violators as part of their zero-tolerance policy aimed at protecting human life, bird life, and the environment.
