Independence Day 2025: India’s 79th Independence Day, check celebrations & events
Here we go again with the annual Independence Day math puzzle. India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025, and yes, the Prime Minister’s Office has stepped in to settle the debate once and for all. PM Narendra Modi is also asking citizens to chip in with ideas for his Red Fort speech this year.
The confusion typically arises from simple arithmetic – subtracting 1947 from 2025 gives 78. However, this represents completed years of independence, not the number of Independence Days celebrated. The first Independence Day was observed on August 15, 1947 itself, making 2025 the 79th celebration.
A PMO letter carried by the Press Information Bureau stated: “As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today extended an invitation to all citizens to contribute their thoughts and ideas for his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15.”
PM Modi has also reached out via social media, asking Indians what themes they’d like reflected in this year’s Independence Day speech through MyGov and NaMo App platforms.
The government has not yet announced the official theme for 2025, though past celebrations have focused on unity, patriotism and social progress. Independence Day falls on a Friday this year, with traditional celebrations planned across government offices, schools and communities nationwide, including the customary flag hoisting, parades and cultural performances.
