The husband of Nikki Cheng Saelee McCain — the Shasta County woman who was declared dead 10 months after she was reported missing — has been charged in his wife’s murder.

Tyler McCain was arrested on Wednesday morning, is being held without bail in the Shasta County Jail and will appear in court on Friday at an arraignment at 1:30 p.m., said Shasta County District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Tyler McCain faces murder and domestic violence charges. Bridgett said investigators believe that McCain had killed his wife to prevent her from testifying in a domestic violence case she filed against him in December 2023.

If convicted, McCain could be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

While Nikki McCain’s body has not been found, the District Attorney’s Office said that California law does not require her body be located in order to prove the crime of murder.

Bridgett said: “We are not required to have a person’s body in order to charge murder. Despite not being able to find her body, we have been provided with overwhelming evidence to prove that not only is Nikki dead, but that Tyler McCain is responsible for her murder.”

A criminal complaint in the case will be filed on Thursday, she said, and prosecutors “have sufficient evidence to charge Tyler McCain for the murder of his wife.”

The murder charge includes an enhancement that the crime was committed with intent to prevent Nikki McCain’s testimony in a domestic violence case from December 2023 that was pending when she went missing in May 2024.

Bridgett said her office dismissed the domestic violence charges in July 2024.

“Many people were frustrated when those charges were first dismissed,” Bridgett said, because it may have appeared that Tyler McCain had gotten away with the domestic violence charges. But prosecutors did not want to compromise the investigation, she said.

A confidential informant provided a statement to investigators reporting that Tyler McCain admitted to killing his wife on May 18, 2024, according to authorities.

The addition of the enhancement “elevates the murder charge from a sentence of 25 years to life to life without the possibility of parole,” said Bridgett, who added that all the charges are being refiled.

“Had we gone forth with the domestic violence case in 2024, we would not have been able to prove that case without Nikki McCain’s testimony,” said Bridgett.

Tyler McCain faces several additional charges.

In May 2024, shortly after his wife went missing, a search warrant was issued for the McCain family home, leading to charges related to illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition after a criminal protective order had been issued, Bridgett said.

Tyler McCain was also charged in May 2024 with forgery after attempting to cash a joint check from the U.S. Department of the Treasury shortly after the search warrant was served, said the District Attorney’s Office.

Bridgett said that in April 2025, Tyler McCain was stopped after throwing items out of his vehicle window. He was found in possession of a partially burned California drivers license belonging to Nikki McCain.

A combined reward of up to $30,000 is still being offered for anyone providing information that leads to Nikki’s location, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said. Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 530-245-6135 or at MCU@shastacounty.gov.
