Gavin Casalegno Addresses Character Hate
The Summer I Turned Pretty star Gavin Casalegno has broken his silence on the hate that fans have directed at his character. Casalegno stars as Jeremiah Fisher, one of Belly Conklin’s love interests.
The show is adapted from Jenny Han’s young adult trilogy of The Summer I Turned Pretty books. The show follows Belly as she finds herself in a love triangle with two brothers she has known most of her life, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Casalegno speaks about the hate that his character has been getting throughout the season. In the interview he speaks about not being able to check his Instagram anymore, Prime Video stepping in before the season with a PSA making it clear that hate speech will not be tolerated.
While he has been approached in real life to be told how hated his character is, Casalegno has managed not to lose perspective and admits that the experience is “pretty comical.” Check out his comments below:
They tend to dislike him, yes. I don’t check Instagram anymore, so I really haven’t seen that much hate. The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny. I think it’s important to also understand and realize that this is a fictional story — and it’s also not me.
I don’t think there’s a single human being in the world who can carry the emotional negativity to the degree that stuff like this happens. And I think that’s why Amazon did a good job of stepping in and being like, “Hey, no bullying.” Though, not really going so well.
The love triangle between Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah has been going on since the start of the show, and the fans are invested in the series by the third season more than ever. The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 will be the final one, with a lot ensuing between Conrad, Jeremiah, and Belly.
Even though the team Jeremiah vs. Conrad debate has been an ongoing debate among the fans throughout the entire season, the events of season 3 seem to spark a more intense reaction from the fans than ever before. The show has been portraying Jeremiah as an immature frat boy this season, and the fans of the show are not happy with his actions in the slightest.
Casalegno seems to have a good understanding that the hate from fans, although directed at him, is actually directed at his The Summer I Turned Pretty character. Even so, it is hard to have any negativity directed towards you, even if you do have this understanding.
It is unfortunate that the hate for his character has gotten so bad that the show has to step in to try to prevent the hate and to ask the audience to be kind to the actors, and it is probably for the best that Casalegno does not check his instagram while the series is still premiering every week.
It is extremely important to remember that in The Summer I Turned Pretty, Jeremiah is a fictional character, but Casalegno is very much a real person.
