Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster Relies on Fan Websites for Source Code
The newest Final Fantasy game is releasing later this month, and it turns out developer Square Enix had to turn to the fans to make the dream of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles a reality. The Ivalice Chronicles is a remaster of the fan-favorite Tactics game, and, as it turns out, the fans were ultimately responsible for the development of the game.
During a panel interview at PAX West 2025, director Kazutoyo Maehiro explained that Square Enix no longer had the source code for the original game, and they had to seek the help of fans, saying: “we actually had to go to different websites made by fans and look for data there.” Maehiro also explained how the popular developer lost the source code to the original game (via Popverse).

Fans To The Rescue
As it turns out, the original source code for FF Tactics was overwritten when the game was brought overseas from Japan, with Maehiro explaining: “We would basically take that data from the Japanese version and overwrite the English data on it, and we wanted to do another language, we would keep just stacking on top and overwriting and overwriting.” That led to the original version needed for the remaster being unobtainable.
The remaster features two versions of the game: the original and the new remaster, which has a visual overhaul as well as a fully voiced cast. Thanks to fans, the remaster exists, and fans, both new and old, can enjoy two different versions of it.
The Ivalice Chronicles Isn’t Just A Rushed Remaster
A Lot Of Work Went Into This One
The amount of work Square Enix had to endure to pull of this remaster is high. Tracking down source code from multiple sources and putting it all together, and making it actually function is incredibly difficult. The remaster caught some flak for not including The War of the Lions content, as well as the spotty graphical enhancements of the remaster. But, overall, the remaster took a monumental effort to make.
While Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth underperformed financially, and with FFXIV being in a rough spot, a remaster of a fan-favorite might be coming at the perfect time, and fans made it happen. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles releases on September 30.
