After years of colonial marines, space stations, and Predator crossovers, Alien might have the perfect new character to shake up the series. Alien: Earth, the newest show in the long-running sci-fi series, has introduced hybrids. These entirely new characters aren’t human, but they’re also not synthetic like the famous androids of past films.

As a series, Alien video games have used most of the most obvious settings and plots available. The introduction of hybrids could mean a whole new breed of protagonist, one that doesn’t need to rely on stealth or a conveniently placed airlock to defeat a Xenomorph, and one that isn’t vulnerable to traditional risks like face-hugging. The next Alien video game could utilize hybrids to bring a new experience to gamers, one that combines the strength of synthetics with a human soul.

Hybrid Characters Could Make For A Really Fun Alien Game

A Relatable Human Being With The Strength Of An Android

Hybrid humans, an entirely new concept for the Alien franchise, are one of the main focuses on Alien: Earth. Rather than being entirely synthetic lifeforms, such as androids seen in earlier movies like Ash or Bishop, hybrids are human consciousnesses transferred into synthetic bodies. This new type of life form, with its intriguing and morally gray premise, presents a unique opportunity for future protagonists in Alien video games.

Hybrids are not only far faster and stronger than humans, but their synthetic bodies could provide any number of abilities for fun game mechanics. Rather than focusing on a human protagonist, the next video game in the Alien franchise could take advantage of a hybrid’s heightened abilities to bring something new to the classic experience.

It Would Be Something Different Than Marines, Predators, And Humans

Hybrids Provide Unique Story Possibilities

After decades of similar story beats, what any new Alien project needs is variety. Alien: Earth has that variety in spades, with story elements that would make for an incredible game. At the very least, using hybrids would mix up the series with both potential protagonists and antagonists.

Past games have made ample use of colonial marines and average human scientists, as well as Predators, so having something new could be novel. The only risk that comes from using a character as powerful as a hybrid is how invulnerable they would be.

As Alien: Isolation demonstrated, the helplessness of playing as a lone human against something as powerful as a Xenomorph makes for an unforgettable horror experience. Taking away the risk that comes with being human could lessen the impact of any Alien game, especially when it comes to facing the titular alien head on.

The Alien franchise, which began with Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, is a Sci-Fi series comprised of several horror films, games, and comic books centered on humanity’s encounters with a hostile extraterrestrial species known as Xenomorphs. Characterized by their lethal prowess and capability to reproduce at an alarming rate, these creatures pose a profound threat to human existence. The primary series protagonist, Ellen Ripley, acts as the voice of reason as she seeks to keep the creatures out of the hands of greed-driven corporate scientists.
