Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi to visit India on August 18 for talks with NSA Doval
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India on August 18 for talks under the Special Representatives mechanism, according to officials in the know. India’s Special Representative is NSA Ajit Doval.
The Chinese Foreign Minister’s visit comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to the nation for the SCO visit.
India and China’s bilateral relations had been strained following the border clashes in 2020. The anticipated visit of Wang Yi comes amid an apparent easing of tensions between Beijing and New Delhi following de-escalation in certain border sectors.
India, China to resume direct flights
India and China are also set to resume direct flights as soon as next month.
The deal could be formally announced when Modi is expected to head to China for the first time in seven years and meet leader Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held in Tianjin from Aug. 31, the people said.
Direct commercial flights between the two Asian nations have been suspended since early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the suspension, travellers have had to transit through regional hubs such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Bangkok, significantly increasing travel time and costs.
