Gilmore Girls remains an incredibly popular TV show even 25 years after it debuted, and one Netflix series is the perfect next watch for fans who are missing Stars Hollow and the compelling mother-daughter dynamic between Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Gilmore Girls technically came to a close in 2007, although it had a brief revival miniseries.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life comprised four episodes, and it was released and set in 2016. Nearly a decade later, some fans are feeling like they need more. While another Gilmore Girls revival isn’t confirmed, there is one Netflix show that is perfect for anyone missing Gilmore Girls, although it’s quite a bit darker.

Gilmore Girls Fans Should Check Out Ginny & Georgia On Netflix

There Are So Many Parallels Between These Two Shows

Fans of Gilmore Girls will absolutely love Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia. In fact, there are a shocking number of parallels between the two shows. Georgia, like Lorelai, had her daughter when she was just a teenager, and she went off on her own from a young age. Likewise, Ginny, similar to Rory, is an exceptionally bright child.

Fans of Gilmore Girls will absolutely love Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia.

Although Georgia’s parents, unlike Lorelai’s, were far from wealthy, Georgia also had Ginny’s wealthy grandparent (from her dad’s side) involved, which she often found frustrating, to say the least. Lorelai and Georgia also share a certain sense of being ‘a mess,’ particularly with both seeming—understandably—a bit less mature than most parents.

Even the settings of these two shows, with Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls and Wellsbury in Ginny & Georgia, are similar. Both have small town charm, and they are even located in close proximity to one another, as Stars Hollow is in Connecticut and Wellsbury is in Massachusetts.

There are of course differences between these two stories as well, such as Georgia also having a son, Austin, whereas on Gilmore Girls, it’s essentially Lorelai and Rory against the world. In addition to those relatively small distinctions, one of the biggest differences between Gilmore Girls and Ginny & Georgia is the significantly darker tone of the latter.

Ginny & Georgia Is The Perfect Gilmore Girls Replacement – But It’s Darker

Ginny & Georgia Has Elements That Gilmore Girls Never Came Close To

While Gilmore Girls certainly touched on more serious topics over the show’s several seasons, it is also a feel-good show for a reason. Ginny & Georgia has some of those same themes, particularly as it pertains to family and friendship, but there’s no denying that Ginny & Georgia is a significantly darker show than Gilmore Girls.

Ginny & Georgia season 3 alone proved this with Georgia’s murder trial, although the show has had many arcs that were very heavy, ranging from multiple characters’ mental health struggles to the history of domestic violence Georgia experienced from Austin’s dad, Gil.

Ginny & Georgia season 3 came with answers to some long-running questions, but it also presented even more to be addressed in the upcoming season 4.

The darker tone of Ginny & Georgia doesn’t mean it’s a bad fit for fans of Gilmore Girls, though. Ginny & Georgia has its heavier moments, but it also takes a story very similar to Lorelai and Rory’s and fills it with even more twists, turns, and surprising moments, as the Ginny & Georgia season 3 ending alone makes clear.

With Ginny & Georgia season 4 currently in the works, this is also the ideal time for viewers to jump into the show. We may not get a Gilmore Girls renewal anytime soon, if we ever do again, but Ginny & Georgia is the perfect replacement.
