A new glimpse at Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina‘s Mighty Nein spin-off has been unveiled ahead of San Diego Comic Con, as Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham tease new reveals at the event. The Prime Video series is an adaptation of the popular online tabletop game campaign series. The Legend of Vox Machina‘s story focused on the first campaign.
Ahead of San Diego Comic Con, Entertainment Weekly shared a first glimpse at Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina’s Mighty Nein spin-off. Alongside shots of the Mighty Nein and the mysterious Essek (Matthew Mercer), which can be seen below, Riegel and Willingham teased what to expect during the event. Check out Riegel and Willingham’s tease below:
Sam Riegel: I think there’s some announcements coming at San Diego. I don’t know about release dates yet, but season 4 is awesome. It’s so cool, and there’s lots of twists and turns coming, lots of unexpected new characters.
Travis Willingham: Certainly no musical numbers of any kind.
What The Legend of Vox Machina’s Mighty Nein Preview’s First Tease Reveals About The Series
A Certain Character’s Presence Teases Where The Story May Start
Critical Role is set within the fantasy realm of Exandria, with each campaign focused on a new group within a specific time period. The Legend of Vox Machina‘s story is adapted from the first campaign, which ran from 2015 to 2017. The Mighty Nein’s tale began in 2018, with the campaign running until June 6, 2021.
While Riegel and Willingham’s tease hints that new reveals are imminent, the first two shots for The Legend of Vox Machina’s Mighty Nein spin-off already set up several things for the spin-off. Ashley Johnson’s barbarian Yasha is absent, but the inclusion of Taliesin Jaffe’s Mollymauk suggests that the series will begin prior to campaign 2, episode 26.
Furthermore, Essek being part of the series helps tease what animated series. The Drow wizard made his debut in campaign 2, episode 57, when Mollymauk was not present with the group. As such, the animated series may be adding a new twist to the tale of Campaign 2.
The Legends of Vox Machina season 1actually featured an early tease of Campaign 3 character Laudna’s (Marisha Ray) backstory, showing how the series can expand familiar stories within the universe.
If Mollymauk will be a key part of the Mighty Nein spin-off, it is possible Essek could be introduced earlier with his own arc that explores his time prior to meeting the Nein. Alternatively, the series could adapt events following Essek’s introduction, with Mollymauk’s time with the team being explored in flashbacks.
