PM Modi launches bioethanol & polypropylene projects in Assam
Modi highlighted that the new bamboo-based bioethanol plant will reduce crude oil dependence, create opportunities for farmers and tribal communities, and inject ₹200 crore (~$22.7 million) annually into the bamboo economy. Small bamboo chipping units will be established, ensuring steady procurement from farmers. The polypropylene plant is expected to spur local manufacturing across plastics, textiles, and other sectors, strengthening ‘Make in Assam’ and ‘Make in India’, Prime Minister’s Office said in a release.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Assam’s bamboo-based bioethanol plant and laid the foundation stone for a polypropylene unit at NRL, announcing projects worth ₹18,000 crore (~$204.4 million).
The plant will inject ₹200 crore (~$22.7 million) annually into the bamboo economy, boost local manufacturing, and support ‘Make in Assam’ and green energy goals.
Modi remarked that just as Assam is known for its traditional Gamosa and its renowned Eri and Muga silk, the state’s identity will now also include textiles made from polypropylene.
He linked these initiatives to the government’s broader green energy and self-reliance mission, recalling his ‘Samudra Manthan’ and National Deepwater Exploration Mission announcements for domestic oil and gas exploration. Modi also reiterated India’s progress in solar energy, now ranking among the global top five, and stressed ethanol as a critical alternative fuel.
“In the changing times, India requires alternative fuels to reduce dependence on oil and gas”, Modi emphasised.
Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Ministers, Sarbananda Sonowal and Hardeep Singh Puri were present among other dignitaries at the event.
