Mumbai’s Iconic ‘Famous Studios’ To Be Replaced By A 69-Storey Luxury Tower
In what feels like the end of an era for Bollywood, another one of Mumbai‘s most historic landmarks is set to become a memory. The iconic Famous Studios, a 79-year-old film hub in Mahalaxmi, is going to be demolished. In its place, a massive 69-storey luxury residential tower will be built, forever changing the landscape and a piece of the city’s cinematic soul.
A Legacy Of Nearly 80 Years
For almost eight decades, Famous Studios has been a witness to the magic of Indian cinema. Founded back in 1943, its floors have echoed with the sounds of “lights, camera, action” for countless legendary films, ad shoots, and song recordings. It was more than just a building; it was a creative space where some of Bollywood’s most memorable moments were brought to life.
Sadly, this is part of a growing trend in the city. Famous Studios is not the first heritage spot to make way for real estate. Not long ago, Goregaon’s famous Filmistan Studio was also slated to be replaced by luxury towers. With each demolition, Mumbai loses a physical piece of its glorious film history, which now only lives on in stories and archives.
What Will Replace The Iconic Studio?
The massive 70,000 sq ft plot where the studio stands will be redeveloped into a super-premium residential project, reportedly by the real estate giant K Raheja Corp. The plan is to construct a towering 69-floor skyscraper filled with plush 3 and 4-BHK homes.
These luxury apartments will offer breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea and the Mahalaxmi Race Course. The new tower is also planned to have connectivity with the nearby Science Museum Metro Station, making it one of the most sought-after residential addresses in the area. The focus is shifting from filmmaking to upscale, modern living. The demolition is expected to begin before the end of 2025.
About Famous Studios
Founded in 1943 by J. B. Roongta, Famous Studios was one of Mumbai’s iconic film studios located in Mahalaxmi. For nearly 80 years, it served as a key location for film shoots, sound recording, and post-production, playing a significant role in Bollywood’s history before being slated for demolition in 2025.
