Resident Evil Requiem Sets New Record for Longest Gap Between Releases
There’s still some time before the release of Resident Evil Requiem, but the long wait so far has already surpassed a previous franchise record. Following the success of Resident Evil Village, Requiem will return to Raccoon City in the shoes of a new protagonist named Grace Ashcroft. While the game won’t be out until next February, it’s picking up plenty of hype from eager survival horror fans.
Yesterday, the gap between Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil Requiem outpaced the longest interim between mainline RE games before, as pointed out by Reddit user edwinstone. It’s now been 1577 days since the release of Resident Evil Village, beating the 1575 days that passed between Resident Evil 6 and 7. In 2023, Capcom released the Resident Evil 4 remake, so the series hasn’t been on a complete hiatus.
RE9 Sets Record For The Longest Gap Between Releases
We’re Heading For 1,757 Days
Edwinstone’s math is dependent on counting Resident Evil – Code: Veronica as a mainline game, but despite the lack of a number in the title, this approach is fairly consistent within the Resident Evil fan base. Code: Veronica directly followed the stories of Resident Evil 1 and 2, setting it apart from many of the franchise’s spin-offs.
With months to go before the release of the game, the wait for Resident Evil Requiem will have absolutely shattered the record by the time that the game is actually on store shelves. Assuming no delays, the final tally will be 1,757 days. Nine more days, and Capcom would have started to look patriotic.
Resident Evil Requiem Could Be Worth The Wait
Capcom Has Been Delivering With Resident Evil
Nearly five years is a long time to wait for anything, but Capcom has done a lot to restore faith in the Resident Evil series in recent years. RE7 hooked fans back in with a new level of horror, Village expanded in ambition again without jumping the shark, and the remakes, for the most part, have set the industry standard for revisiting past releases.
If all goes well, Resident Evil Requiem could be another excellent entry that pleases veterans of the franchise and newcomers alike. The game is set to offer both first-person and third-person modes, appealing to split camps in the fan base.
Of course, just how well it blends a new story with the return of classic elements remains to be seen, and there’s also the potential for technical issues like the ones that have plagued Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds on PC. Regardless, Resident Evil Requiem has already set a new franchise record, for better or worse.
