Dropping From 75 Crore To 5 Crore In 8 Days, SHOCKING Drop At The Box Office
After a historic opening weekend that shattered Kollywood records, the box office journey for Rajinikanth‘s latest film, Coolie, has taken a sharp downturn. The film, directed by the acclaimed Lokesh Kanagaraj, has struggled to maintain its momentum during the weekdays, witnessing a massive crash in daily collections.
The drop has been so significant that the film’s lifetime earnings are now projected to be far below the initial blockbuster expectations. This steep fall serves as a clear example of how audience reception can make or break a film, regardless of its massive opening.
A Week Of Two Halves: From Record Highs To Steep Lows
Coolie had a phenomenal start, collecting a massive Rs 220 crore in its extended four-day opening weekend. However, the story changed dramatically once the weekdays began. The film saw a shocking decline in audience footfall, with collections dropping day after day. The numbers clearly show a film that lost its grip at the box office after a promising start.
Here is the day-wise breakdown of its India gross collections:
- Day 1 (Thursday): Rs. 75.50 cr
- Day 2 (Friday): Rs. 63.00 cr
- Day 3 (Saturday): Rs. 46.25 cr
- Day 4 (Sunday): Rs. 40.50 cr
- Day 5 (Monday): Rs. 13.00 cr
- Day 6 (Tuesday): Rs. 10.00 cr
- Day 7 (Wednesday): Rs. 7.25 cr
- Day 8 (Thursday, est): Rs. 5.50 cr
After eight days, the film’s total India gross stands at Rs 261 crore, making the Rs 300 crore lifetime mark look very difficult.
The Impact Of Mixed Word-Of-Mouth
The primary reason for this sharp fall is reportedly the mixed to negative word-of-mouth from the audience. While the film was expected to easily cross the Rs 400 crore mark in India, the underwhelming reception has severely impacted its long-term run. The performance of Coolie has become a lesson for the industry on how crucial positive audience feedback is for a film’s success, especially after the opening weekend.
Underperformance On The Global Stage
The film’s struggles were not limited to India. After a strong start overseas with a weekend of USD 16.75 million, the collections also dropped sharply during the weekdays. A film that was once expected to become an all-time Kollywood record-breaker globally might now finish as the 5th or 6th highest-grossing film from the industry. Adding to the pressure, the movie was sold to distributors for a high price, and sources suggest it has severely underperformed based on its costs, making it a tough outing for its backers.
