Even as the country debates on whether to send stray dogs to shelters or not, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation  (GHMC), which covers an area of 650 square kilometres, has decided to organise an indie dog adoption drive.

“We will put on display healthy, vaccinated, and dewormed Indie puppies. You can pick them up for adoption for free,” a GHMC official said.

He said by adopting, residents will not only help reduce the street dog population but also provide a safe and loving environment for these animals. The adoption drive will be held on August 17.

The GHMC has also faced severe criticism in recent times over the issue of stray dogs. Citing several examples of stray dogs attacking people, injuring them severely and exposing them to the dreaded rabies disease, across the city.

“The only requirement is love and care from prospective pet parents. Indie dogs are known for being playful, loyal, and low maintenance, making them perfect companions for families and individuals,” he said.

“The idea is to encourage people to give love and a home to adorable street puppies,” the official said.

On Thursday, August 14,the Supreme Court reserved its order regarding an interim plea to give a stay of its August 11 directive for the removal of stray dogs from the Capital’s streets and their placement in shelters within six to eight weeks. A day after the Supreme Court, the Rajasthan High Court too passed a similar order.

The court’s directive triggered a nation-wide discussion on how to tackle the street dog problem. Animal lovers and those who are concerned with the growing number of dog bites and incidence of people succumbing to rabies took to the media and social media opposing and supporting the apex court’s directive.
