Fawad Khan And Vaani Kapoor’s Abir Gulaal
After being shelved indefinitely amidst political controversy, the much-anticipated comeback film of Fawad Khan, Abir Gulaal, co-starring Vaani Kapoor, has been given a new lease on life. According to new reports, the film, which many feared would never see the light of day, is now slated for a global theatrical release on August 29, 2025. This development comes after the film’s promotions were abruptly halted earlier this year.
A Controversial Postponement
The film was originally on track for a May 9 release, and its promotions were in full swing, highlighted by a successful music launch event in Dubai on April 19. However, the situation took a drastic turn following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The incident led to a significant backlash within the Indian film industry against the involvement of Pakistani artists in Bollywood projects.
In the wake of the immense opposition, the producers of Abir Gulaal had no choice but to postpone the film indefinitely. The music label Saregama also pulled the film’s songs from all platforms just two days after the attack, leaving the project’s future in serious doubt.
New Global Release, But India Remains Unlikely
A recent report from the UK-based outlet Biz Asia Live has confirmed that the film is now scheduled to arrive in cinemas worldwide on August 29. The report also notes a potential title change, with the film possibly being released as Aabeer Gulaal. However, there is no mention of a release in India, and industry sources suggest it is highly improbable.
Given the prevailing sentiment, it is expected that the makers will opt for an overseas-only release strategy. An industry insider drew parallels to recent Punjabi films, stating, “The makers of Abir Gulaal will go the Sardaar Ji 3 way. The Diljit Dosanjh-starrer did not get a release in India as it starred Pakistani actress, Hania Aamir. It went on to do huge business overseas.” This strategy of bypassing a domestic release to tap into the lucrative international market could be the path forward for the Fawad Khan starrer.
