Lilo & Stitch Streaming Date Revealed After $1B Box Office Run

The streaming release date has been revealed for Lilo & Stitch. The movie is a Disney live-action remake of the classic 2002 animated movie of the same name. The film features the return of original Stitch voice actor Chris Sanders in the role of the classic fuzzy alien, with a cast that also includes Maia Kealoha, Sydney Agudong, Zach Galifianakis, and Billy Magnussen.
Lilo & Stitch was well-liked when it came out in theaters. It opened to an impressive $146 million, passing the entire domestic gross of this year’s Snow White in just one weekend. The movie also got great reviews from critics, including ScreenRant‘s Mary Kassel, who gave the the movie 7 out of 10 stars.
Disney has officially revealed the streaming release date for Lilo & Stich. The movie is set to release on Disney+ on September 3.
Disney+ announced this through an adorable short video that featured clips from the movie as well as shots of Stitch eating popcorn. The latter half of the video featured the tunes of “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride.”
What This Means For Lilo & Stitch
Lilo & Stitch will finally be available on the platform for which it was originally intended. Back when the movie was in earlier development, the Hawaii-set film was going to be a straight-to-Disney+ release. Disney eventually pivoted this strategy along with some other changes.
The ultimate theatrical release of Lilo & Stitch paid off big time. The movie ended up making over $1.02 billion at the box office, becoming the first Hollywood movie to cross the coveted $1 billion mark. Currently, the movie is the no. 2 highest-grossing of the year so far, second only to Ne Zha II.
This success meant that Lilo & Stitch was given a long window of theatrical exclusivity. The film had significant momentum in theaters, maintaining success even weeks after its initial release and as it competed against other kids’ movies.
Lilo & Stitch eventually came to VOD on July 22. The movie has gained further success already in digital sales. Eventually, audiences will have waited an entire additional month for the movie to become available on streaming.

Lilo & Stitch is almost guaranteed to become a mega-hit on streaming. This is great news for the franchise’s future, as Lilo & Stitch 2 is already in the works. If the live-action remake does as well as it is capable of, the film can have significant momentum going into its next installment, and potentially top the first movie’s box office.
